Country Living – Reducing the Risk of a Barnfire

Some good information courtesy of the Ministry of Agriculture, via the Ontario newsroom. This is especially important, as loss due to fire can be financially and emotionally devastating. Some of the recommended best practices include:

  • Hiring a qualified professional to assess all farm buildings
  • Getting all electrical equipment inspected yearly by a licensed contractor
  • Only using CSA of ULC labelled heat lamps and keeping the area around these clear of clutter or bedding materials that could catch fire
  • Eliminating clutter inside and outside buildings to reduce risk of fire spreading
  • Checking exposed electrical equipment for corroded parts regularly and repair or replacing damaged fixtures or equipment ASAP
  • Not storing dangerous fuels and chemicals such as gasoline, cleaning fluids or solvents inside barns
  • Keeping all equipment and motors in good working condition, free from dust and debris
  • Always have a fire extinguisher on hand and a reliable water source available
